Hi everyone! Welcome to Day 12 of the Happy Journal Challenge. Our prompt for today is to give your sweetheart a hug. You can also give a hug to anyone, if you’d like. When I originally made the booklet for this challenge, I was thinking about February and showing love to our sweethearts but you can include your kids or friends into this one.

Before you roll your eyes at such a simple prompt, let me share with you that the touch part of our sensory system is more powerful than you might realize.

All those feel-good feelings we get when we hug someone, especially someone we love, aren’t just in our minds. A quick science lesson shows us that oxytocin, the love hormone, is released when we touch someone. Oxytocin is also tied to increased happiness, and hey, that’s what we’re looking for this month, right?

Better yet, cortisol, the stress hormone that we’re trying to experience less of in our lives is lowered when we get or give a hug.

What I like about this prompt is you AND your loved one will benefit from it. I have a drawing of a family hug that my daughter drew a couple of years ago tacked to our refrigerator because it gives me so much joy. In fact, I think I’ll draw that hug in my happy journal today.
