Welcome to Day 13 in our Happy Journal Challenge. Today we are going to look up and outside of ourselves for signs of joy and beauty.

I’m sure you’ve heard maxims about looking inside of yourself to find happiness. Quotes about how only you can determine your happiness quotient because in the end, you’re the one making the choice.

This is true. Placing our happiness in the hands of our circumstances or in other people’s whims is a sure way to ride a roller coaster of emotions.

However, what fuels our happiness is often outside of ourselves. My personal happiness is rooted in my faith in God. He is my hope when my life gets turned upside down.

I remember quite clearly a moment while I was on a plane several years ago, probably flying to my parents’ home for Christmas. The sky was brilliant blue, the sun almost blinding, and below me was a thick carpet of clouds. It felt like a magical world where everything was perfect—the air was clear and the sun was shining.

As we made our descent, the clouds closed around the plane, and the icy rain began to pelt the windows. The sky turned grey and dark. By the time we landed, it looked dismal and cold outside.

But I couldn’t help but remember the world above the clouds. It made me think of the verse in Colossians in the Bible that says, “Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.” The writer was reminding us to remember that this life isn’t all there is.

When I was living in L.A., I took a series of photographs that I titled, “Look Up.” They were mostly of clouds, the tops of buildings, and power lines covered with black birds. That particular art project was my reminder to look outside of myself, to rise above the junk in my world, and to see the beauty around me.

When you look up today, what will you see?

I hope you have an amazing day. And I’ll see you tomorrow!
