Welcome back to our What Creativity Looks Like series. Every week this summer (and now fall!), I’ve been introducing you to some amazingly creative women. My hope is as you read these interviews and virtually meet these ladies, you’ll be inspired to create more in your own life.

What’s your name (and business name, if you have one)?
Emily Kennedy, Two Purple Couches
Tell us about YOU. How is your creativity expressed?
I express my creativity in lots of different ways. I love to create things with my hands, and I’m always interested in adding new creative skills to my repertoire. I’ve recently become enamored with watercolors and hand-lettering. They are especially neat when combined! I also express my creativity through decorating; I love changing up my home’s decor, and I love to create new vignettes for each season, especially Christmas.
How did you get started in your creative practice? (“Practice” is just a fancy word for all the fun creative things you do. :))
I’ve always been “crafty.” Some of my earliest memories are crafting at the kitchen table with my mom or working on my own project while she was sewing. I’ve always loved writing and creating, so starting a crafts and home decor blog was a natural fit for me!
What keeps you going?
Imagination and curiosity. I am constantly imagining new ideas and possibilities. When I can’t sleep, it’s because my mind is running through projects I want to do around our home. Then I’m curious to see if I can actually learn how to do this or if I can accomplish that. It can be an exhausting cycle, but it’s part of who I am!
What is your greatest joy?
Accomplishing something new, and more specifically, something I had lots of doubts about.
What’s a “typical” day (or week) like for you? In other words, how do you incorporate creative projects into your life?
A typical day for me starts slowly, I have to admit! I am not a morning person! I like to have a sit-down breakfast and relish my coffee. I check emails and schedule some social shares. Then I’ll dive into my to-do list for the day. At any given time, I’m probably working on at least one home-related project – this might be decorating a room or a DIY of some sort – along with several crafts projects. I usually have multiple half-finished projects lying around!
I also spend time brainstorming blog content ideas and writing drafts of future posts. Writing a crafts and home decor blog is awesome, because it means creating is a requirement! But sometimes that means I forget to create for the sake of creating. I am trying to better manage my time to allow for both my “required” projects and creative exploration. My goal is to spend a few hours a week creating for the fun of it – this usually means getting out my watercolors or practicing brush lettering.
What would you say to someone who wants to be creative but can’t find the time?
Start small, or think about ways to incorporate creativity into everyday tasks. Maybe this means doodling in your planner, making a card for a friend, or shifting around your home decor items while you’re dusting.
What do YOU think creativity looks like?
I think creativity can be a very personal thing. You don’t have to open a shop or share your projects on social media. Creativity is whatever makes your heart happy.
