This decorated butter dish was a snap to make! I can’t wait to wrap it up as a gift this year. 🙂
Today I’m starting a series called A Handmade Christmas where I’m going to share super simple gifts that you can whip up in no time. I know handmade gifts aren’t for everyone but I really enjoy making at least one part of the gift. I usually think and pray for whoever I’m making the gift for as I doodle, sew, paint, or craft. And this project was no different. I can’t wait to wrap this one up as a gift for . . . well, I can’t tell because she might be reading this post!
This idea came to me as I was walking through the aisles of Target (of course.) I saw several plain porcelain butter dishes like the one pictured below and thought what a great “canvas” they would make for my porcelain paint pen. If you don’t have a Target in your area, check out local thrift stores for plain housewares like this butter dish. You might be able to decorate a really cute collection!
All you need for this project is the butter dish and a porcelain pen. I prefer the porcelain pen option because the ink raises slightly from the surface and looks really nice.
Since the porcelain pen ink dries almost instantly, it’s a good idea to sketch out what you’d like to sketch onto the butter dish.
I found that since I had to be careful to not touch the ink as I was drawing, my drawing hand was shakier than usual, but I like how this made it look a little less “perfect.” Work left to right, and keep your palm up to avoid smears. Take your time and work little by little across the dish. Can I tell you how satisfying it was to make this project?
After finishing my decorated butter dish, I followed the directions on the pen which said to let it air dry for 24 hours before baking in the oven. **Be sure to follow the instructions on your pen as they do vary.**
Now to think of what I’ll tuck inside for my friend as a surprise. 🙂 She’s such a sweet person, and I can’t wait to give this to her for Christmas.
You can also use a porcelain paint pen to make a cute mug like this one:
I have several more gifts that I’ll be sharing for this Handmade Christmas series, all of which are simple to make so you don’t have to stress out this holiday season. 🙂
Hope you all have a lovely {and creative} day!
