Looking for a simple barrette for your flower girl? This DIY flower barrette is so sweet, and you can make it in just a couple of minutes. Win-win!
When I was planning my wedding, I wanted to have DIY elements to it without the stress of making every single item. So we bought simple dresses for the flower girls, and I made their baskets and these flower barrettes. They were so simple to make and looked absolutely darling clipped into my nieces’ hair, so I thought I’d share this tutorial with you.
For this tutorial, I purchased my supplies online and the total per barrette was less than $1.00! Seriously a great deal! The best part? You’ll have leftovers (with the silk flowers, alligator clips, and glue sticks) so you can make more lovely projects. 🙂
How to Make a Simple Flower Barrette
You will need:
Silk flowers
Hot glue gun and glue
Alligator clips
Pencil or chopstick
Optional: craft jewels for the center of the barrette
First, remove the flowers from the stems. Usually this is as simple as just popping them off the plastic stem.
Disassemble each flower. Completely remove and discard any of the plastic green elements. If your flower has silk green leaves that you’d like to keep for the barrette, that’s fine, but the plastic parts won’t glue to the tiny alligator clip very well.
Plug in your glue gun, and let it heat up. Our glue gun has seen better days but it works! 🙂
Once the glue is ready, you’ll have to work fast. You’re going to essentially reassemble the flower again onto the barrette. Gluing each layer down separately will ensure the petals stay secure.
Squeeze a strip of glue on the barrette and place the bottom layer of petals onto the alligator clip. Use a pencil or chopstick to press down firmly. Proceed with all of the petals.
Add sticker gems to the center if you’d like. You can find these in the scrapbooking section of most craft stores.
Fluff the edges of the barrette so it looks like a real flower, and you’re finished!
Making these flower barrettes again reminded me how much I loved them the first time around. Back then, I made them for my nieces, and today I made this one for my daughter. 🙂 I think it will be a perfect compliment for her Easter dress this year.
