Simple Felt Coasters

These felt coasters are simple enough to whip up in an afternoon and make a really sweet gift!

I’ve been eyeing this stack of craft felt for a while and finally succumbed. It’s more sturdy than the cheaper felt you can find at the craft store so I immediately began thinking of projects like coasters, ornaments, etc.

Isn’t it gorgeous?

The only skill needed for this project (other than needing to be able to cut fabric) is how to do a simple back stitch. I used this stitch for the entire project so was able to whip these up in an afternoon.

First, you’ll need to think of the drawing you want to make. I chose a lion because the pinking shears made me think of a lion’s mane. 🙂 I also made one coaster with leaves just because I couldn’t resist.

Choose felt that is fairly stiff. You will be using two pieces but you want them to be firm like a coaster would be.

Cut out the squares for your coasters. I used complimentary colors for mine: Light green + dark green, dark orange + yellow. You can use regular scissors or pinking shears as felt doesn’t unravel. I used a coaster to guesstimate how big I wanted mine to be.

Use an embroidery pen to mark the felt if needed. You’ll be able to use a damp cloth at the end to wipe away your tracing marks.

Choose complimentary colors (to the felt) and select one square. Stitch your design.

At this point, you can glue the two felt squares together with craft glue or you can stitch the corners. I chose to stitch the corners as shown, and they work just fine.

Mix up your designs a little to see which ones you like the most. It’s fun to think about the edges of the felt as a part of your design.

And don’t feel like you need to fill the entire piece of felt with embroidery. Sometimes a small design looks great too!

Happy crafting! 🙂
