How to Make a Rosebud Barrette

Learn how to make a rosebud barrette with this simple tutorial. It’s perfect for Easter and also makes a really sweet gift!

Can you believe Easter is less than a week away? I have so many happy memories of Easter from my childhood but for some reason, one of the things that I remember most were the Easter dresses. Oh, how I loved having that new dress to wear for Sunday. I have two younger sisters, and we wore the frilly socks and white shoes too.

And of course, there were many years where we all donned big bows on the top of our heads for Easter Sunday. Ah, memories. Now to be fair, it wasn’t my mom’s idea that we wore those bows. We made them out of ribbon with one of our aunts and loved them. Somehow those bows made me feel special and dressed up.

Flash forward several years and now I have my own little girl to dress up for Easter. Except for some reason, I feel bad dressing her up in too frilly of a dress because she goes to nursery and just wants to run around and play (which is a bit difficult when you are tripping over layers of tulle.) If anything, I’ve got to dress up her luxurious head of hair so I decided to make a tiny rosebud barrette.

You could really use any flower for this tutorial, but if you do use a larger flower, I recommend pulling each of the petals off one by one and gluing them separately onto the barrette. They won’t stay on if you try to glue the whole flower on—believe me, I’ve tried.

How to Make a Rosebud Barrette

You will need:

Mini rosebuds (I needed three for one barrette)
Hot glue gun + glue
Scissors
Small alligator clip (like these)

Thankfully, I have plenty of rosebuds left over from my wedding craft supplies. I’ve been wanting to make something with these but could never figure out what that something was. This project allowed me to use three of the rosebuds so I’m still on a mission to use these up.

First, cut three rosebuds off of the stems, being careful to leave a tiny bit of stem so the leaves stayed put.

Working fast, apply glue to the barrette and press one of the rosebuds on. You could also apply glue to the rosebud and stick it onto the barrette. Continue to glue on two more rosebuds. Hot glue dries in seconds so you don’t have very much time if you want to arrange them.

Usually there are little tiny strings left over on the barrette and flower from the hot glue, so just pull those off and you’re finished! I think these would be darling to package up as a gift. I can’t wait for my daughter to get up from her nap today so I can put this in her hair. 🙂
