These polka dot dish towels are so simple to make—give them as a gift for your friend who loves to cook or use them to wrap up mason jars filled with goodies!
This Handmade Christmas series is turning out to be so much fun. Earlier in the fall, I picked up a bunch of items with the thought of having some projects to share on the blog but then they kind of morphed into Christmas gifts. 🙂 If you’re just joining us for this series, you can see the first two ideas here and here.
This particular project began when I picked up a set of three flour sack dish towels from Target. They were plain white and all I could think of was what a fun blank canvas they would be to decorate.
DIY Polka Dot Dish Towels
You will need:
Plain white flour sack towels
Acrylic paint in your choice of colors (I used red and gold)
Circle sponge stamp (or stamp/shape of your choice)
(I used the Martha Stewart brand of circle sponges which are actually called, “Foam Pouncers.” Who knew?)
The picture above shows this little sponge stamp. I was given these last year and have really enjoyed using them as they work great for all sorts of painting projects. When you’re finished with them, you pop out the sponge, wash it, and let it dry.
For the towels, you’ll want to open them completely up and lay them on cardboard or something you don’t mind getting paint on.
I decided to add polka dots to only 1/3 of my towels. Since the towels came neatly folded, it was easy for me to see how far up I wanted to stamp. I merely followed the fold line. Usually I work left to right, but for some reason, I worked right to left on this project. It doesn’t really matter what you choose, just make sure to not stamp in a way that your hand will accidentally smear the paint. Acrylic paint is pretty much permanent.
The circles do not stamp paint evenly, but I like that look and was pleased with the end result. It’s hard to see in this picture, but the gold has a slight shimmer. Love it. (This acrylic paint was also a Target product; I found it in their craft section.)
I’ll be using these towels to wrap up a mason jar craft that I’ll be sharing very soon—probably next week!
