I recently discovered that April is National Letter Writing Month. How fun is that? Letters are such a great way to keep in touch. Even though we live in an age where an email, tweet, or text flies much faster to the recipient, there is still something about opening the mailbox to find a real, old-fashioned letter inside.

We’ve been talking about how to give generously even when we don’t have a lot of money to give, and letter writing is a perfect way to give to someone else. Many of you have mentioned in the comments in the past few months that you love sending and receiving cards and letters to others which makes me so happy to hear. Snail mail hasn’t quite died yet! 🙂

Here is a list of posts that will help you get back into your letter writing groove. I’ve included tutorials and prompts to help you! Let’s do this!

A friend of mine made me write me back cards for my birthday last year which was the best birthday present ever. We’ve been sending little notes and drawings back and forth all year long. This is also a great idea for grandkids and grandparents!

  1. I just love an old fashioned hand written letter. The paper, the writing, the thought, finding it in the mailbox…it’s all wonderful. 🙂

  2. We have some family living out of state, and I’ve been doing so bad about keeping in touch. You’ve inspired me to sit down with my boys and make it a priority to write some letters and have the boys draw them some pictures this week 🙂
(And I love your little doodle graphics…they are so unique and make me smile every time I see them!)

    1. Thanks so much for your sweet comment, Ellen! All of my family lives out of state and I need to be better at writing too–so I suppose my encouragement-to-write posts are written for me too! 😉 Your family will LOVE letters from your boys! Have a lovely day!

  3. I love this post! I have been thinking that I need to get back into the habit of writing notes and sending in the mail. Texting, email and Facebook seem to have replaced all of that for me. But really who doesn’t love to get mail??

    1. I know, right? It’s funny–I text my mom all the time but when I receive a letter from her…it makes me so happy! 🙂

    1. You’re so welcome! I’m glad you were inspired to write some letters! 🙂 🙂 Have a great day!

  4. I had no idea April was letter writing month! I just came up with a way to mail things in a DIY fabric mailing envelope and now I have double the reason to start sending letters and gifts! Great post! Love idea of encouragement cards!

    1. I just went over to your site and LOVE your fabric mailing envelope. What a clever idea! 🙂 I’m so glad you stopped by! 🙂

  5. What a wonderful thing to promote. I have to say that I still love to go to the mail box. The anticipation of the fact that there might be a letter or some personal correspondence is a thrill. And I think now more than ever because of all the electronic mail a letter is treasured !!! And can be treasured thro’ the years – my grandma sent me letters that my dad wrote home while in the service. My dad is gone today but I still can hold in my hand a little bit of my dad and remember………. Thanks for sharing !!

    1. What a treasure to have those letters from your dad! I keep my old letters too–they are like little time capsules. Thanks so much for stopping by, Rebecca! 🙂

  6. I love this! I shared it with my readers on Facebook. I love writing snail mail but I rarely get any back. Canadian postage is so expensive. But real letters are a special blessing that a text message just doesn’t bring. Thanks for sharing. I found you through Ask Latisha’s TGI Saturdays link-up.

    1. Thanks so much for sharing, Amanda! It seems like snail mail has become a lost art but there is a growing movement of people who are writing again which makes me happy. Thanks so much for stopping by! 🙂

I simply love writing letters ……..& even getting them 😉
But now all these social networking sites are killing the sweet old mails!
Your posts are simple the best!!

  13. Since I’m suppose to be writing a paper right now, I’m procrastinating and wasting time like crazy, and I decided to go back and find the very first post I ever read on your blog, which I found through The Paper Mill Store. This is the one! Reading this even now gets me excited!

    1. Maggie! You’re the best! 🙂 I’m so glad we ran across each other in blogland. Now, get back to that paper, haha. 😉

    1. Hi Tami, I will be doing a new challenge this year that will be posted on my blog the last week of March. 🙂 It will be different from the other challenges (I like to mix the format up each year) but will still be fun! 🙂 Also, the other letter-writing challenges are open year-round so you can start any time. 🙂 Have a great day!
